The Colac Vets had eighteen riders racing in good conditions for their monthly medal.

The back three bunches made up two thirds of the field which was to have an impact on the outcome of the race.

The front three bunches only had six riders with Murray Matthews having just his third race with the Vets this year sent off the 32-minute mark on his own.

The three scratchmen made short work of their 2-minute chase to the next bunch of five riders, which had lost Steve Hamling early with mechanical problems.

They caught them at the 20Km mark and then caught the 4.30-minute bunch of four riders 7Km later.

Starting the second of two laps, two more riders dropped off, still leaving a group of nine riders to takes turns of pace.

The 12- and 27-minute bunches, which had combined, were caught with 5Km to go.

At this point Damian Luppino started off with a small attack resulting in a couple more from the scratchmen stretching out the field.

Heading up Lineen’s hill Grant Oates launched his attack with Tony Luppino jumping across to him straight away.

Oates attacked again but could not shake off Luppino.

Luppino was able to beat Oates to the line to take his second monthly medal this year.

The next four riders who were 150 metres back fought out for third place with Ralph Iselt taking the sprint.

Matthews was unlucky to be caught with about 1Km to go.

There will be no club race this week with the Geelong club hosting their open at Paraparap.

The Colac Vets had a field of 38 riders for the Red Rock Classic raced with the Geelong and Warrnambool clubs.

Riders started in ideal conditions but steady light rain began early in the race and persisted throughout the race.

The only plus was that there was no wind to speak of which made the race easier than previous years.

The 18 minute bunch rode better than expected and four of them along with two riders from the 24 minute bunch made it to the top of Red Rock with nearly 3 minutes to spare over the 6 and 10 minute bunches.

Warrnambool’s Clive Coomber finished first ahead of Geelong’s David Spence and Colac’s Bruce Roberts.

Scratch finished five and a half minutes behind the winner with Colac’s Tony Luppino taking fastest time ahead of Geelong’s Andrew Goodwin and Warrnambool’s Peter Greig.

There will be no club race this week with Warrnambool hosting their open race at Dixie.

The Colac Vets were back to fifteen riders for their club race.

Riders raced in good conditions over a two-lap course through Alvie and Warrion, starting and finishing at the Cororooke hall.

The field was split into five bunches with 24 minutes separating the three scratchmen out to the two limit riders.

Second scratch was once again boosted by having Gavin O’Brien put off with them to form a strong bunch of four riders.

They reeled in the third scratch trio with 10Km to go and the middle and front markers 6Km later.

Steve Hamling led the field into the home stretch with Damian Luppino and Arno van der Schans making an early charge for the line.

But Gavin O’Brien and Ralph Iselt had a spirited sprint for the line with O’Brien just edging out Iselt to take his first win for the year.

The ever consistent Heather Hamling finished in third place.

The scratchmen came in one and a half minutes back to take fastest time by 32 seconds with Tony Luppino leading in Larry Nocera and Andrew Pownceby.

This week the club will host the Red Rock Classic with riders from Warrnambool and Geelong competing.

September 23rd 2018

The Colac Vets were back down to just ten riders this week for their monthly medal.

Riders raced in cool and dry conditions with light winds.

The two scratchmen were set a tough task in chasing a 2-minute gap to the second scratch foursome.

They gained time on them for the first ten kilometres but then began to lose time.

The 10-minute trio caught the lone limit rider, and with 7km to go looked like they may have had enough of a lead.

But the second scratch foursome caught this group heading up Lineen’s hill in the final two kilometres.

Bruce Roberts had already broken clear of this group when second scratch came along and was heading to the finish line, only to be reeled in with 200 metres remaining.

After a long lead out from Mark Purdie, Arno van der Schans hit the line first to claim his first win in two years and his first monthly medal since 2006.

Ralph Iselt was second with Heather Hamling in third place.

With the scratchmen losing two minutes to second scratch, van der Schans also claimed fastest time.

September 16th 2018

The Colac Vets had their best field in five weeks with fourteen riders turning up for their club race.

Riders started off in cold conditions with patches of drizzling rain and westerly winds over the four-lap course around Cororooke.

The two winning limit riders who beat the scratchmen in by five minutes last week, had their handicap dragged back six minutes this week.

But they again improved by beating in the scratchmen by nearly two and a half minutes.

It was Des Read’s turn to take the win this week over co-marker and last week’s winner Terry Robinson.

The four second scratchmen caught the five riders from the 9-minute bunch the fourth time up Brown’s Lane with 5Km to go.

Gavin O’Brien enjoyed the lift back out to second scratch and led this bunch in two minutes behind the winner to take third place.

The three scratchmen were not far behind, but a clash of wheels between Tony Luppino and Andrew Pownceby saw them both crash out in the final few hundred metres, leaving Larry Nocera to take fastest time uncontested.

The Colac Vets had field of eleven riders for their club race split into four bunches.

Riders raced a three and a half lap course around Cororooke having to go four times up Ryan’s Lane into a strong westerly wind.

The two limit riders were given a generous 35-minute start over the three scratchmen and even with the windy conditions they finished five minutes ahead of them.

Terry Robinson claimed his first win since June last year over co-marker Des Read.

Ralph Iselt led the second scratch bunch in four minutes later to take third place.

The scratchmen came in another minute later with Tony Luppino taking fastest time over co-markers Larry Nocera and Gavin O’Brien.

The Colac Vets had nine riders for their club race on Father’s Day.

Riders raced in dry conditions with a stiff southerly wind blowing.

Terry Robinson was the lone limit rider with a 32-minute start on the three scratchmen.

The three second scratch riders caught the next two riders with 9Km to go, with Robinson being caught 3Km later.

Coming into the Cororooke hall finish Heather Hamling led out for the sprint to try and get husband Steve the win.

The move paid off with the ever hard working and selfless Steve Hamling finally getting up for a rare win.

Ralph Iselt was second with Bruce Roberts in third place.

The scratchmen came in just over two minutes behind with Tony Luppino taking fastest time over Larry Nocera and Gavin O’Brien.
