The Colac Vets had a field of fourteen riders for their club race.

Riders competed over the same course as a warm up for next weeks Red Rock Classic.

The race was one lap shorter than what riders will be doing next week, but proved to be tough conditions with a strong westerly blowing.

Limit rider Des read was only caught 4km from the finish.

Five riders left from the second and third scratch bunches contested the uphill sprint finish, with David Coventry proving too strong to take out his second win for the year ahead of an in-form Heather Hamling with Damian Luppino in third place.

The three scratchmen finished just over a minute later with Tony Luppino digging deep to just get over the top of David Lunn, with Grant Oates further back, to take fastest time.

This weeks Red Rock Classic will have riders from Geelong and Warrnambool joining Colac to compete over the 54Km course.

The Colac Vets had a field of eleven riders for their monthly medal.

Riders raced in clear conditions with moderate winds.

With only one middle marker turning up to race, Gary Legg was put out with front markers Neil Widdicombe and Bruce Roberts.

These three had a 17-minute start on the strong scratch trio.

With Legg being the stronger of the three, Roberts was the first to drop off the pace after the half way mark and then Widdicombe with 8Km to go.

Meanwhile the scratchmen had reeled in the 4-minute second scratch trio and the 7-minute duo at the three-quarter mark.

But Legg held out and went on to finish with 51 seconds to spare over the fast finishing scratchmen to claim his first win in three and a half years, which also was a monthly medal.

Tony Luppino led in David Lunn and Grant Oates to take fastest time.

The Colac Vets had a field of fifteen riders for their club race.

Riders raced in calm conditions out to the Wool Wool turn around and back through Alvie and Warrion before finishing in Factory Rd Cororooke.

The field was split in to six bunches with the two scratchmen giving 33 minutes start out to lone limit rider Des Read.

Peter Theodore and Gary Legg riding off the 14 minute mark caught Bruce Roberts and Neil Widdicombe off the 17 minute mark.

These four went on to reel in Des Read and come in 800 metres ahead of the combined second and third scratch bunches.

Theodore claimed his third win for the year ahead of Legg, Roberts and Widdicombe.

Arno van der Schans led in second and third scratch to fill 5th spot.

The two scratchman had a close sprint for fastest time with Tony Luppino just edging out David Lunn with the duo saving the time by one minute over second scratch.

Sept 3rd 2017

The Colac Vets only had eight dedicated competitors turn up to race for their club race after heavy early morning rain on Sunday.

However, by the time the race started the rain had cleared with only very strong westerly winds to contend with making for tough conditions.

Lone scratchman Tony Luppino rode a determined race to reel in the second scratch bunch of four riders, which had splintered early.

Arno van der Schans and Heather Hamling from second scratch, had picked up Gerard Hickey from the 11-minute duo, with these three riders being caught by Luppino with 12Km to go.

Limit rider Des Read held out until 6Km to go coming in to Alvie.

Luppino then cleared away coming over the Alvie hill finishing at the Cororooke hall a clear winner, with van der Schans coming in second ahead of Hamling in third.

August 20th 2017

The Colac Vets had a field of sixteen riders for their monthly medal.

Riders raced in cool and fine conditions.

The field was split into six bunches with the two scratchmen chasing five minutes to a bunch of five riders and 37 minutes out to the two limit riders.

The five riders from the second scratch bunch never let the two scratch riders into contention with the scratch riders only picking up 44 seconds of their 5 minute handicap on second scratch by races end.

Second scratch picked up the three riders from the third scratch bunch into the second of the two lap course.

This combined group then caught the middle and front markers in the last two kilometres with Des Read holding out to be caught 600 metres from the finish.

A rejuvenated David Lunn, who was having just his third race this year and eighth race in the last two years, rode a strong race to pick up his 20th monthly medal with his last one being six years ago.

Heather Hamling finished well to take second with Ralph Iselt in third place.

Tony Luppino led in Grant Oates to take fastest time.

There will be no club race this week with the Warrnambool club hosting a race at Dixie.

Aug 13th 2017

The Colac Vets had a small field for the third race in a row with 11 riders competing in their club race in good conditions.

Last week’s winner Des Read was joined by Sue Theodore and this pair was sent of the 29 minute mark and had a 14 minute start on Gary Legg and Terry Robinson.

Meanwhile David Coventry was put off the scratch mark, for the first time, with Grant Oates and this pair were chasing a 2 minute gap to a bunch of five riders.

Coventry stayed with Oates until the Alvie hill at the 27Km mark at which point they were still 40 seconds behind the five riders in front of them.

Oates then went on alone and caught the five riders with 9Km remaining.

These six riders then caught the front markers with 4km to go.

In the final few kilometres Oates put several surges to wear down the other riders and finished off strongly to take the win with Chris Kane hot on his wheel to take second and Arno van der Shans coming in third place.

Four Colac members competed in the Victorian Veteran Cycling Road Championships at Learmonth.

Normally ran in age groups, this year it was ran in grades.

Rebecca Luppino was Colac’s best performer taking out the women’s A Grade race.

Aug 6th 2017

The Colac Vets had their smallest field for the year with just 10 riders fronting up to race in cold but dry conditions for their club race.

Riders raced a four lap course with reasonably strong north westerly winds.

Des Read was sent off the 36 minute mark and had a big 29 minute head start on the next bunch of three riders.

Meanwhile lone scratchman Tony Luppino had to chase 2 minutes to a bunch of five riders and did a tremendous job in reeling them in before the end of the third lap.

This group of six riders came in just 19 seconds behind the 7 minute trio consisting of Rebecca Luppino, Gavin O’Brien and Gerard Hickey who took second, third and fourth place respectively.

But it was Des Read who held on out in front to comfortably come in with over three minutes to spare and take his second win since returning back to the Colac Vets in 2014.
